Race Formats and Scoring
Learn how a Formula 1 weekend is structured, how Sprint events fit in, and how drivers and teams earn championship points across the 2026 season.
Standard Race Weekend Format
A typical Grand Prix weekend runs from Friday to Sunday and mixes practice, qualifying, and the main race so teams can prepare their cars and fight for points.
Friday – Practice and Data Gathering
- Free Practice 1 (FP1): First track time where teams test setups, new parts, and tire performance.
- Free Practice 2 (FP2): Longer runs that simulate race conditions to understand tire wear and fuel loads.
Saturday – Final Practice and Qualifying
- Free Practice 3 (FP3): Final chance to tune the car and build confidence before qualifying.
- Qualifying (Q1, Q2, Q3): A three-part knockout session that decides the starting grid for Sunday’s race.
Sunday – Grand Prix
- Race distance: Usually around 305 km, with Monaco as a special case with a shorter total distance.
- Main goal: Finish as high as possible in the top 10 to score championship points.
2026 Sprint Weekend Format
In 2026 there are six Sprint weekends where an extra 100 km race on Saturday adds more wheel-to-wheel action and extra points.
Friday
Practice plus qualifying. The qualifying session sets the starting grid for Saturday’s Sprint race.
Saturday
A 100 km Sprint race. The finishing order decides the starting grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Sunday
Full Grand Prix distance with the usual main points on offer for the top 10 finishers.
Sprint races award points to the top 8 finishers: 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point for 1st through 8th place.
Points System and Pre‑Season Testing
2026 Championship Points
The main Grand Prix uses the standard top‑10 scoring system, while the Sprint race rewards the top 8, making Sprint weekends especially valuable for the championship.
| Finishing Position | Main Grand Prix Points | Sprint Race Points |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 25 | 8 |
| 2nd | 18 | 7 |
| 3rd | 15 | 6 |
| 4th | 12 | 5 |
| 5th | 10 | 4 |
| 6th | 8 | 3 |
| 7th | 6 | 2 |
| 8th | 4 | 1 |
| 9th | 2 | 0 |
| 10th | 1 | 0 |
No points are given for positions below 10th in the main race or below 8th in the Sprint, although expanding the points-paying positions has been discussed.
2026 Pre‑Season Testing
To prepare for the big 2026 rules change, teams get nine days of pre‑season testing split across three sessions instead of the shorter programs used in recent years.
These extra laps help teams improve reliability, fine‑tune new power units and aero, and arrive at the first race with more confidence in their car setups.
